Seniors - Fire Safety for Caregivers

Smoke and CO Alarms

  • Test your smoke alarms – It is the law in Ontario that all residences have working smoke alarms.

Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside sleeping areas.

Test your smoke alarms every month and change the batteries at least once a year.

  • Make sure they're in the proper locations.

There should be one on every storey of a home, and outside all sleeping areas.

It is also recommended that one is installed inside the bedrooms as well if they sleep with the door closed—especially if they burn candles or smoke in their rooms.

  • Every household needs a CO detector on every level.

Carbon Monoxide is the “silent killer” for a reason: It has no smell or taste, and the symptoms of CO poisoning are very easily passed off as a minor illness (headache and fatigue).

  • If your CO detector goes off, immediately move yourself and your guests to a 'fresh air location', either outdoors or next to an open window, and call 9-1-1.
