Grades 5-8 - Become a Senior Fire Warden

Watch those candles!

  • Candles are one of the leading causes of household fires, and a lot of the time people don't even realize they're using them wrong!

As a Senior Fire Warden, it's important that you make sure candles are used properly.

  • The first and most important rule is never to leave candles unattended.

If everyone's going to leave the room or go to bed, they should extinguish the candles first.

And remember: A candle isn't completely out until the wick stops glowing.

  • Keep candles at least one foot (30cm) away from anything that can burn!

A lot of people don't think about this and put candles near drapes, papers, or flammable centrepieces on the kitchen table.

  • Be careful when putting out a candle! Use either a 'bell' extinguisher, or blow in a gentle, controlled breath.

Blowing too hard can splash burning-hot wax everywhere!
