Seniors - Fire Safety for Caregivers

Summer Precautions

  • Most grills are designed for outdoor use only, and are dangerous within a confined area. Gas grills may be specifically designed for indoor use, but they must be carefully installed to properly ventilate toxic gasses.

  • Only charcoal briquettes should be used in charcoal grills. To ignite charcoal briquettes, use charcoal lighter fluids. Do not use any other flammable liquid—and never use gasoline as a charcoal lighter fuel. Gasoline vapours are highly explosive.

  • Always light barbeques with a long match or mechanical lighter designed for barbeques.

  • Combustibles should always be kept away from barbecues. There should never be anything that can catch fire if the barbecue is somehow tipped over in any direction.

  • Barbecues should be kept uncovered during startup, and should never be leaned over during ignition.
