Seniors - Fire Safety for your Grandkids

First Aid for Children

  • It's always good to teach your grandchildren that, if they or anyone they know suffers a burn, to run it under cool water for a few minutes.

This both helps them keep calm in the case of an accident, and ensures that they follow the accepted method of dealing with a burn instead of something they heard from their friends that might make things worse.

  • Seek emergency care immediately if:

    • Burns are on face, hands, feet, major joints, or genitals
    • Burns are larger than their palm
    • Burns are white, tight, dry, or painless
    • Burns are chemical or electrical in nature
  • If your child is burned, see a doctor if:

    • Burn doesn't heal within 2-3 days
    • Burn becomes foul-smelling
    • Wound develops thick drainage, redness, or swelling
    • The child develops a fever after being burned
