Seniors - Fire Safety for Caregivers

Holiday Safety

  • Make sure that the person you care for uses all precautions with their holiday decorations: Ensure that their Christmas lights aren't frayed or loose, that they don't overload power sockets or run extension cords near heat sources or across doorways, and that decorative lights aren't kept on when they're out of the home or asleep.

  • If they use metal tree, they should never use electrical lights on it.

  • If they use a real tree, it should be kept in a large, deep, non-tip stand, well away from exits, fireplaces, heaters, and any other heat sources. When they dispose of it, it should be kept outside, a safe distance from their house.
