Seniors - Fire Safety for Caregivers

Candle Safety

  • Fire experts discourage the use of candles in bedrooms, where almost half of home candle fires start.

If the person you care for insists on burning candles in the bedroom, keep them away from bedding, curtains and blinds, wallpaper, upholstered furniture, piles of clothing, and newspapers and magazines, and monitor them carefully.

  • Ensure that candles are always at least one foot (30cm) away from anything that can burn, including drapes, flammable centrepieces, and miscellaneous clutter.

  • Don't place lit candles in windows or near doorways, where drafts could bring combustibles in contact with the flame.

  • Ensure that all candle holders are sturdy, won't tip over easily, are made from a material that can't burn, and are large enough to collect dripping wax.

Don't allow candles to burn lower than two inches (5cm) from either the candle holder or any decorations.

  • Ensure that there are flashlights and battery-powered lamps available for emergency lighting.

Avoid using candles for emergency lighting if at all possible.

  • Don't use a candle for light when adding kerosene to a heater, lantern, or other device. The flame could ignite the fumes.

  • Never leave a candle unattended. Candles that aren't properly attended are one of the leading causes of household fires.
