Grades 1-4 - Become a Junior Fire Warden

Always be ready for a fire!

  • If you see a fire, it's important to know what to do! Pay attention to school fire drills, and make sure you know two ways out of every room at home! If you can't think of a second way out of any rooms in your house, ask your parents to help you figure it out!

  • If there's an emergency, it's important to check closed doors before you open them! Before you touch the handle, feel the wood with the back of your hand. If the wood is warm, it means the doorknob will be hot! Take another way out!

  • If you see smoke while you're trying to escape, try another route! Smoke can be even more dangerous than fire if you breathe it in. If you can't get out without going through smoke, make sure you crawl on your hands and knees—the air close to the ground will be cleanest.

  • At home, you should have a special place a safe distance from your house where you meet your family after escaping a fire. That way, if anyone gets separated while getting out, they know where to meet up. This can be any landmark, like a tree in the front yard or at the end of the driveway.

  • But most importantly, if you hear an alarm go off, don't hesitate--evacuate! Follow your escape plan! Find the quickest way out, and meet the rest of your family at the meeting place so everyone knows you got out okay!
