Seniors - Fire Safety for the Senior Community

A Safer Lifestyle

  • Don't Reach for Danger—be aware of loose clothing around heat sources like candles and stoves. It's easier for you to see how close a loose sleeve is to disaster!

  • You Snooze, You Lose! If any of your friends drink, make sure that they don't do so while cooking or near other heat sources such as candles or fireplaces.

If they're smokers, ensure that they don't smoke while they're tired, or in anyplace they frequently doze off such as in bed or in an easy chair.

  • If you're entertaining smokers, make sure that they use a large, deep, non-top ashtray, and keep an eye on anyone who is drinking and smoking. Empty ash trays often, wetting their contents before dumping them. After entertaining smokers, always check the cushions for smouldering cigarette butts.

  • Never smoke in a household where medical oxygen is used. This includes where the occupant isn't on oxygen but a visitor is. If you have oxygen, post “no smoking” and “no open flames” signs and be adamant about guests not smoking.

  • If you have friends who are smokers on oxygen, make sure that they only smoke outside.
