Seniors - Fire Safety for Caregivers

Home Safety

  • If the person you care for is a smoker, make sure that they use a large, deep, non-tip ashtray.

Keep an eye on them if they are drinking and smoking, to make sure they don't fall asleep with a lit cigarette.

Empty ash trays often, wetting their contents before dumping them.

After an elderly smoker has left the room, make sure you check the cushions around where they were sitting for smouldering cigarette butts.

  • If you work out of the home of the person you look after, keep an eye out for where fuels are kept.

These should be stored in approved containers or tank. Repurposed or makeshift containers can leak dangerous liquids or gasses, and are very easily mislabelled.

  • If there is someone in the household on oxygen, then nobody should smoke indoors.

There should be “No smoking” and “No open flames” signs posted in these households.
